Chevrolet has been working to push the limits of Chevrolet Volt and the company has now made an announcement that the upcoming 2013 Chevrolet Volt can run 38 miles on a single charge which is three miles extra than the 2012 existing models. Chevrolet said that the mile per gallon for the new 2013 Chevrolet Volt will be 98 miles and the total range including extended range operations will be 380 miles. Chevrolet said that the company engineers have made minor changes to the vehicle that has improved the performance and durability of the vehicle.
The company revealed that the manganese spinel chemistry still remains the key to Chevrolet Volt’s battery system but there are some materials that they have changed that have made changes to the overall performance of the car. Bill Wallace, GM Director of Global Battery Systems Engineering said that they have made changes at the cell level which sounds like they have made changes to the recipe by changing the ingredients for the cake. He said that the customers will experience the difference on their own when they will drive the new 2013 Chevrolet Volt.
Chevrolet also announced that they have also worked on the battery and therefore the new model will have 16.5 kWh battery instead of 16 kWh. The engineers have also changed the battery charge state to ensure better battery life and have reduced the buffer to provide better performance on the road. This will also lead to less battery degradation and can withstand temperatures up to -30 degree Celsius.
